Chromium Picolinate for Blood Sugar: What the 7 mcg in Glyco Defender Means

Quick answer

Glyco Defender lists 7 mcg of chromium, as chromium picolinate, in each 1 mL dropperful. That is 20% of the 35 mcg Daily Value. Studies of chromium picolinate for blood sugar mostly used 200 to 1,000 mcg a day. They found small, mixed effects in people with diabetes and no help in healthy people. No trial has tested the drops.

The mineral01

What is chromium picolinate in Glyco Defender?

Chromium picolinate is a trace mineral, chromium, bound to picolinic acid. In Glyco Defender it is the first line of the Supplement Facts panel and the only one with its own printed amount.

The label reads "Chromium (as Chromium Picolinate) 7 mcg" at 20% of the Daily Value. It sits above the 15.47 mg proprietary blend, not inside it.

The body uses chromium to help insulin work, which is why so many blood sugar products include it. Most trials in a 2019 review used the picolinate form (NIH ODS, Chromium).

The amount02

How much chromium picolinate is in one dropperful?

One dropperful of Glyco Defender holds 7 mcg of chromium. A bottle holds 30 servings, so it carries 210 mcg in total.

The Daily Value is 35 mcg, which is how 7 mcg becomes 20% DV. Adults need roughly 20 to 35 mcg a day. Chromium-only supplements commonly give 200 to 500 mcg (NIH ODS, Chromium).

The research03

Does chromium picolinate help blood sugar?

Chromium picolinate has shown small, mixed effects on blood sugar, and only in people with diabetes taking far more than 7 mcg. In healthy people, a review found no glucose benefit.

NCCIH lists chromium among the few supplements with weak evidence from small, inconsistent studies (NCCIH, Diabetes and Dietary Supplements). The four findings below come from the NIH fact sheet (NIH ODS, Chromium).

  1. 1997 trial

180 adults with type 2 diabetes. 1,000 mcg a day lowered fasting glucose versus placebo and versus 200 mcg.

  2. 2010 trial

The same 1,000 mcg a day found no significant change.

  3. 2016 review

No glucose help in people without diabetes.

  4. 2019 review

Doses of 1.28 to 1,000 mcg, mostly picolinate. Slight drops in fasting glucose and A1C in people with diabetes, of unclear clinical meaning.

Dose vs research04

Is 7 mcg of chromium picolinate enough to matter?

Seven mcg is 3.5% of 200 mcg, the low end of key glucose trials. It is 0.7% of the 1,000 mcg dose with the clearest result. That is a daily-intake amount, not a research dose.

The sales page calls the drops "Chromium-Enhanced" (Glyco Defender sales page). The label backs it only in that chromium is present. The ADA notes that without a deficiency, supplements show no benefit (ADA, Vitamins & Supplements).

The chromium bar is exact; the herb bars use blend math.

Red bars: what 1 dropperful can hold. The label prints only the chromium amount; for blend ingredients we show an even split (15.47 mg / 21, about 0.74 mg per mL) and the most the label order allows. Blue bars: daily amounts of that ingredient alone in studies; the light extension shows a range. Even the upper limits fall well below the studied doses. A 20:1 or 10:1 extract ratio describes how much plant went in, not how strong the extract is (Monagas et al., Front Pharmacol 2022).

Label math05

How is chromium different from the 15.47 mg blend?

Chromium is the only Glyco Defender ingredient with a printed dose. The other 21 share one total of 15.47 mg, and a proprietary blend may keep single weights private (21 CFR 101.36 (eCFR)).

The blend runs from most to least by weight, so the line in place k holds at most 15.47/k mg. Gymnema, eighth, holds at most 1.9 mg. Chromium's 7 mcg equals 0.007 mg: tiny, but known.

The 20:1 marks on plant lines describe how much dried plant went in, not strength, and they do not change the label weight (Monagas et al., Front Pharmacol 2022). See the supplement facts page.

Safety06

Is chromium picolinate safe with diabetes medicines?

Chromium may add to the effect of insulin and other diabetes drugs, which can raise the chance of a low. Anyone on those medicines should ask a doctor before starting a chromium product (NIH ODS, Chromium).

Chromium may also lower the absorption of levothyroxine, a thyroid medicine (NIH ODS, Chromium).

Keep taking prescribed medicine

Never stop or change a diabetes or thyroid medicine because you added chromium. Tell your care team about every supplement (ADA, Vitamins & Supplements).

  • On insulin, a sulfonylurea or a meglitinide: talk to your doctor first (NIDDK, Low Blood Glucose)
  • Taking levothyroxine: ask about spacing the doses
  • Already using a chromium product: count both sources

More on lows sits in supplements and diabetes medicines.

Bottom line07

What matters more than chromium for blood sugar?

Lifestyle change has far stronger evidence than chromium. In the Diabetes Prevention Program, about 7% weight loss and 150 minutes of activity a week cut type 2 risk by 58% (NIDDK, Diabetes Prevention Program).

At 7 mcg, chromium may fill a gap in a thin diet. It does not stand in for food, movement or medical care. Compare products with our eight label checks, or open the full ingredient list.

FAQ08

Chromium picolinate questions

How much chromium is in Glyco Defender?

Each 1 mL dropperful lists 7 mcg of chromium, as chromium picolinate, which is 20% of the 35 mcg Daily Value. A 30 mL bottle holds 30 servings, or 210 mcg across the whole month. It is the only ingredient on the label with its own printed amount.

What is chromium picolinate used for in blood sugar supplements?

Makers add chromium because the body uses it to help insulin work. Studies at 200 to 1,000 mcg a day found small, mixed changes in people with diabetes and none in healthy people (NIH ODS, Chromium). NCCIH rates the evidence as weak, drawn from small, inconsistent studies (NCCIH, Diabetes and Dietary Supplements).

Is 7 mcg of chromium picolinate a meaningful dose?

It is a nutrition-level dose, not a research dose. Seven mcg is 3.5% of 200 mcg, the low end of key glucose trials, and 0.7% of 1,000 mcg. It covers a fifth of the Daily Value, which matters most for someone whose diet is short on chromium.

Can chromium picolinate cause low blood sugar?

On its own it is not known to cause lows in healthy people. Combined with insulin or other diabetes drugs, chromium may add to their effect and raise the chance of a low (NIH ODS, Chromium). If you take those medicines, ask your doctor before adding any chromium product.

Does chromium picolinate interact with thyroid medicine?

It may. The NIH fact sheet says chromium may reduce how well levothyroxine is absorbed (NIH ODS, Chromium). If you take levothyroxine, ask your pharmacist how to space it from Glyco Defender or any other chromium source, and keep your thyroid dose exactly as prescribed.

Can a separate chromium supplement be taken alongside Glyco Defender?

Ask your doctor first, especially if you take diabetes medicine. A chromium-only product often gives 200 to 500 mcg, many times the 7 mcg in the drops (NIH ODS, Chromium). Add both amounts together, and remember the Glyco Defender label says not to exceed its own dose.
