Normal Blood Sugar Levels: A1C, Fasting and 2-Hour Test Ranges
Normal blood sugar levels are a fasting glucose below 100 mg/dL and an A1C below 5.7%, according to NIDDK. Prediabetes is 100-125 mg/dL fasting or an A1C of 5.7-6.4%. Diabetes starts at 126 mg/dL fasting or an A1C of 6.5%, confirmed by a second abnormal result. A supplement such as Glyco Defender does not change these cutoffs.

The short version01
What are normal blood sugar levels?
Normal blood sugar levels, by the lab tests doctors use, mean a fasting plasma glucose under 100 mg/dL and an A1C under 5.7% (NIDDK, Diabetes & Prediabetes Tests).
Those two numbers carry most of the weight. Fasting glucose is measured after you have not eaten. A1C is a blood test reported as a percent. Each one has three bands: normal, prediabetes and the diabetes range.
A single result is a starting point, not a label for life. NIDDK says a diagnosis of diabetes needs two abnormal results, from the same sample or from two different ones.
Type a number into the finder below to see its band. It reads the cutoffs only.
- NormalA1C below 5.7%Fasting below 100 mg/dL
- PrediabetesA1C 5.7-6.4%Fasting 100-125 mg/dL
- Diabetes rangeA1C 6.5% or higherFasting 126 mg/dL or higher
Type an A1C or a fasting number to see its range. One test is not a diagnosis; a doctor confirms with a repeat test.
Ranges from NIDDK (NIDDK, Diabetes & Prediabetes Tests). About 115.2 million U.S. adults have prediabetes, many without knowing it (CDC, National Diabetes Statistics Report). Home meters are not diagnostic tests.
All three tests02
What are the A1C, fasting and 2-hour glucose ranges?
The A1C, fasting and 2-hour glucose ranges each split into normal, prediabetes and diabetes, and NIDDK publishes all three side by side (NIDDK, Diabetes & Prediabetes Tests).
The 2-hour test is the oral glucose tolerance test, or OGTT. You drink a set glucose drink at the lab, and blood is drawn two hours later.
The normal cell for the 2-hour test reads "below 140" because prediabetes starts at 140 mg/dL. The same logic gives "below 5.7%" for A1C and "below 100" for fasting.
| Test | Normal | Prediabetes | Diabetes range |
|---|---|---|---|
| A1C | Below 5.7% | 5.7% to 6.4% | 6.5% or higher |
| Fasting plasma glucose | Below 100 mg/dL | 100 to 125 mg/dL | 126 mg/dL or higher |
| 2-hour OGTT | Below 140 mg/dL | 140 to 199 mg/dL | 200 mg/dL or higher |
Two abnormal results are needed for a diabetes diagnosis. They can come from the same blood sample or from separate tests.
A1C03
What A1C level is normal?
A normal A1C is below 5.7%. An A1C of 5.7% to 6.4% is prediabetes, and 6.5% or higher is in the diabetes range (NIDDK, Diabetes & Prediabetes Tests).
The steps between bands are small. Moving from 5.6% to 5.7% crosses a line, so a borderline A1C is worth a second look with your doctor.
- Below 5.7%: normal range
- 5.7% to 6.4%: prediabetes
- 6.5% or higher: diabetes range, confirmed by a second result
Fasting04
What is a normal fasting blood sugar?
A normal fasting blood sugar is below 100 mg/dL on a lab fasting plasma glucose test (NIDDK, Diabetes & Prediabetes Tests).
A result of 100 to 125 mg/dL is prediabetes, sometimes called impaired fasting glucose. A result of 126 mg/dL or higher is in the diabetes range.
A quick example: 98 is normal, 104 is prediabetes, and 131 is in the diabetes range until a repeat test confirms it.
A home meter is a tracking tool. The cutoffs above come from lab tests, and a meter does not diagnose. Bring your meter log to your appointment so your doctor can compare it with the lab result.
After meals05
What about blood sugar after meals?
For blood sugar after meals, the sources we cite give no home target, so we do not print one. The closest lab number is the 2-hour OGTT.
The OGTT is not the same as checking after lunch. It uses a fixed glucose drink and a timed blood draw. Below 140 mg/dL at two hours is normal, 140 to 199 is prediabetes, and 200 or higher is the diabetes range (NIDDK, Diabetes & Prediabetes Tests).
If you check after meals on a home meter, ask your care team what range they want for you.

What do prediabetes numbers mean?
Prediabetes numbers mean blood sugar sits above normal but below the diabetes range: an A1C of 5.7% to 6.4% or a fasting glucose of 100 to 125 mg/dL (NIDDK, Diabetes & Prediabetes Tests).
It is common. The CDC estimates that 115.2 million U.S. adults are estimated to have prediabetes (CDC, National Diabetes Statistics Report).
It is also a point where change pays off. In the Diabetes Prevention Program, a lifestyle plan aiming for 7% weight loss and 150 minutes of activity a week cut the risk of type 2 diabetes by 58% over about three years (NIDDK, Diabetes Prevention Program).
Lifestyle group
Lower risk of type 2 diabetes than placebo in the DPP, and 71% lower in people 60 and older.
Metformin group
Lower risk with the prescription drug metformin in the same trial.
Weight loss
The CDC's range: about 10 to 14 pounds for a 200-pound person, plus 150 minutes of brisk activity a week (CDC, Prediabetes).
The habits behind those numbers are laid out on our insulin resistance basics guide.
Diabetes range07
When is blood sugar in the diabetes range?
Blood sugar is in the diabetes range at an A1C of 6.5% or higher, a fasting glucose of 126 mg/dL or higher, or a 2-hour OGTT of 200 mg/dL or higher (NIDDK, Diabetes & Prediabetes Tests).
Many people find out late. The CDC estimates 40.1 million people in the U.S. have diabetes, and about 11.0 million adults with it are undiagnosed (CDC, National Diabetes Statistics Report).
Symptoms can be a clue. The CDC lists frequent urination, more thirst and hunger, weight loss you did not plan, tiredness, blurry vision and slow-healing sores (CDC, Symptoms of Diabetes). Any of these is a reason to book a blood test.
Lows08
What blood sugar number is too low?
For many people with diabetes, a blood sugar below 70 mg/dL counts as low (NIDDK, Low Blood Glucose).
Lows mostly come from medicines. NIDDK names insulin, sulfonylureas and meglitinides as drugs that can cause them. Signs include shakiness, hunger, dizziness, confusion and a fast heartbeat.
The usual first step is 15 to 20 grams of fast carbohydrate, then a recheck in 15 minutes. The full list of signs, and when to call 911, is on our supplements and diabetes medicines guide.
Supplements09
Can a supplement change your blood sugar numbers?
A supplement is not a reliable way to change your blood sugar numbers. The ADA says its Standards of Care do not find any supplement proven to lower blood glucose (ADA, Vitamins & Supplements).
Ginseng gives a sense of scale. Across 16 trials, it lowered fasting glucose by about 5.6 mg/dL, with no clear change in A1C (Shishtar et al., PLoS One 2014). Those trials used about 100 mg to 20 g a day.
Glyco Defender lists ginseng 12th of 21 in a 15.47 mg blend, so one dropperful holds at most about 1.3 mg of it. Its chromium is 7 mcg, while key trials used 200 to 1,000 mcg (NIH ODS, Chromium). See the full ingredient list.

Keep taking prescribed medicine
Do not stop or change a diabetes medicine because you started a supplement. Some supplements can add to those drugs and push a number too low, so tell your care team first (ADA, Vitamins & Supplements).
FAQ10
Blood sugar number questions
What is a normal blood sugar level in the morning before eating?
A normal morning fasting blood sugar is below 100 mg/dL on a lab fasting plasma glucose test. A result of 100 to 125 mg/dL is prediabetes, and 126 mg/dL or higher is in the diabetes range. A home meter reading is useful for tracking, but a lab test is what doctors use to diagnose.
Is an A1C of 5.7% normal blood sugar?
No. An A1C of 5.7% is the first point of the prediabetes range, which runs from 5.7% to 6.4%, according to NIDDK. Below 5.7% is normal. It is not diabetes, but it is a good reason to talk with your doctor about activity, weight and a follow-up test.
What blood sugar number on the 2-hour glucose test is normal?
On the 2-hour oral glucose tolerance test, a result below 140 mg/dL is normal. A result of 140 to 199 mg/dL is prediabetes, and 200 mg/dL or higher is in the diabetes range. The test uses a set glucose drink at a lab, so it differs from checking after a meal.
Does one high blood sugar number mean I have diabetes?
No. NIDDK says a diabetes diagnosis needs two abnormal results, either from the same sample or from separate tests. One high number is a reason to repeat the test with your doctor. A home meter reading alone is not enough to diagnose diabetes or prediabetes.
What blood sugar numbers count as prediabetes?
Prediabetes is an A1C of 5.7% to 6.4%, a fasting glucose of 100 to 125 mg/dL, or a 2-hour OGTT of 140 to 199 mg/dL. The CDC estimates 115.2 million U.S. adults have prediabetes. The DPP lifestyle program cut the risk of type 2 diabetes by 58%.
What blood sugar number is dangerously low?
For many people with diabetes, below 70 mg/dL is low. Signs include shakiness, hunger, dizziness and confusion. Take 15 to 20 grams of fast carbohydrate and recheck in 15 minutes. Call 911 when someone with a low passes out, has a seizure or cannot safely swallow.
Can Glyco Defender drops improve my blood sugar numbers?
No study has tested Glyco Defender, so there is no evidence it changes A1C or fasting glucose. Each dropperful lists 7 mcg of chromium and a 15.47 mg blend, far below studied doses. The ADA finds no supplement proven to lower blood glucose, so track your numbers with your doctor.
