How to Read a Supplement Facts Label, One Line at a Time

Quick answer

To read a Supplement Facts label, start with the serving size, then the amount and % Daily Value of each nutrient, then any proprietary blend, and finally the other ingredients. On Glyco Defender, one 1 mL serving has 7 mcg of chromium (20% DV) and a 15.47 mg blend.

Where do you start when you read a Supplement Facts label?

Start at the top with the serving size and the servings per container. Every other number is per serving.

Glyco Defender lists a serving of 1 mL and 30 servings per container, so one 30 mL bottle lasts 30 days at the one label dose. Calories are 0.

A wrong serving is the most common mistake. If you take two, double every number.

What does % Daily Value mean on a supplement label?

The % Daily Value shows how much of a nutrient one serving gives compared with a reference amount for the day.

The chromium Daily Value is 35 mcg, so 7 mcg is 20 percent (NIH ODS, Chromium). Trials of chromium for blood sugar used hundreds of mcg, which is why a % DV alone says little about benefit.

How do you read a proprietary blend and its footnotes?

Read the blend as one weight shared by every line under it, listed from most to least by weight (21 CFR 101.36 (eCFR)).

Here that is 15.47 mg across 21 lines, so an even split is about 0.74 mg each. The carets mark a 20:1 extract equivalent, and a ratio is not potency (Monagas et al., Front Pharmacol 2022).

Then read the "other ingredients" line. It includes xylitol, which is dangerous to dogs. The supplement facts page prints the whole panel.

What is a quick checklist for any supplement label?

Use five checks, in this order, before you buy anything.

  1. Serving

Match the serving to the dose you will take.

  2. Amounts

Compare each amount with a studied dose.

  3. Blends

Divide the total by the line's place for a ceiling.

  4. Other ingredients

Look for allergens, sweeteners and pet hazards.

  5. Cautions

Read the warning text and ask your doctor.

FAQ01

Questions about reading supplement labels

Why does a supplement label say not a significant source of some nutrients?

That line lists nutrients present in amounts too small to count, such as protein or iron. The Glyco Defender panel prints it for fat, sodium, sugars, calcium and others. It means those items add almost nothing.

Does FDA check what is printed on a Supplement Facts panel?

Not before sale. FDA is not authorized to approve supplements before they are marketed (FDA, Using Dietary Supplements). That is why independent lab reports matter, and none is published for this product.

Where do I find the manufacturer on a supplement label?

Look near the bottom for 'manufactured by'. A line that says 'distributed by' names the seller only. The Glyco Defender label names a distributor in Ogden, Utah, and not the manufacturer.
